‘You are like apartheid spies’

2012-06-27 09:54

The Eastern Cape ANC has likened delegates who leak information to the media to “apartheid spies”.

In a statement, provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said it was against the party’s constitution for members to leak information about discussions in closed meetings.

Last week, some Eastern Cape members leaked information about a provincial general council resolution to limit President Jacob Zuma’s wives from getting state benefits.

The provincial leaders played it down and denied that such a resolution had been taken.

However, three conference delegates from the Eastern Cape confirmed that that such a resolution had been taken, but said the provincial leadership had suppressed it to avoid division at this week’s national policy conference. The conference is under way in Midrand.

Mabuyane said he hoped that those who leak information would have a change of heart.

“Anonymous and nameless people who leak information to the media hurt our ANC the same way apartheid government spies planted to infiltrate our movement hurt our liberation struggle and our movement.

“We urge all our comrades who have ventured into this bad conduct to refrain from doing so and we hope that this call will appeal to their senses in a manner that will inspire them not to act like apartheid spies. Any person who leaks information to the media is ill-disciplined and doesn’t respect the ANC,” he said.
