Young Communist’s all grown up

2012-07-15 17:25

They might not be the type to demand generational mix, but the Young Communist League has managed to get its leader, Buti Manamela, elected to the SACP’s central committee.

Manamela made it to number 31 on the list of additional members, which was decided on by consensus last night and this morning.

The list shows that many of the old faces were retained – Transport Minister Ben Martins, Deputy Cooperative Governance Minister Yunus Carrim, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies, and Education Director-General Gwebs Qonde were among those who were already on the committee.

Justice Minister Jeff Radebe and Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi (deputy chairperson) are not new faces to the party’s leadership, because they previously served as coopted leaders, but they had now been formally elected.

Former party chairperson Gwede Mantashe and former treasurer Phumulo Masualle, who both stepped down because of their obligations in the ANC, made it to number one and two in the list of additional members.

SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande said this was a sign that there was no “fall-out” about their departure and that the party was “united”.

The newly-elected central committee is:
General secretary – Blade Nzimande
National chairperson – Senzeni Zokwana
National Treasurer – Joyce Moloi-Moropa
First deputy general secretary – Jeremy Cronin
Second deputy general secretary – Solly Mapaila
Deputy national chairperson – Thulas Nxesi
