Young, jobless and desperate – Disillusioned teacher speaks

2012-06-23 17:37

Last year, Roy Ndlovu left a FET college in Free State where he had been teaching for more than 10 years because he was “heartbroken by the destruction of young lives”.

Ndlovu is not his real name. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he still works for the department of education and fears being victimised for speaking out.

He paints a bleak picture of nepotism, mismanagement and wasted money at FET colleges over the past decade, forcing the recent intervention from the department of higher education and training.

“How can a college justify buying a fleet of cars – for what purpose I don’t know – when lecturers do not even have access to the internet?” he asked.

“We had to buy ourselves USB modems with our own money so we could keep abreast of what is required out there.”

Ndlovu said that manyexcellent lecturers had left the FET sector in disillusionment.

“I had a colleague with a masters degree in science who was made to teach communications,” he said.

Ndlovu said a severe shortage of qualified lecturers had led to the inexplicable appointment of underqualified lecturers, including students, to FET lecturing positions.

“A person was appointed to teach a subject she was not qualified in.

“That lecturer sat for an exam with students she was teaching. Some of them passed and she failed,” he said.
