Fans of the mystic thriller The Vampire Diaries cried themselves to sleep last night after Nina Dobrev confirmed that she was leaving the series after six seasons.

Dobrev, known as Elena Gilbert on the show, took to her Instagram page last night to announce that she would be leaving after the May finale.

“I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six-season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime,” Dobrev wrote on the social media site.

She promised her last episodes as a vampire would be thrilling. “There’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May.”

But will TVD continue without Dobrev? E! Online reported that the series had been picked up for season seven, which will begin in January. But fans of the show don’t see how it could.

The 26-year-old actress is the main character of the series, and is caught in a love triangle with two brothers.

As Dobrev mentioned in her announcement letter last night, she has been “a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead”, and serious fans have sat through the six-year rollercoaster ride with her.

One huge question remains: how will she exit the show?

The Vampire Diaries returns from its production break on April 18 at 9.30pm on Vuzu Amp.
