Youth League meets to decide on Juju’s appeal

2012-03-03 18:42

The ANC Youth League’s national executive committee was set to meet today to decide whether to endorse an appeal by its leader, Julius Malema, against his expulsion.

Malema has been given 14 days to appeal.

Seven provinces this week came out in his support, but three sources told City Press that Malema’s allies in the ANC were beginning to distance themselves from him. An ANC member with close links to Malema’s strategists said the former youth leader refused to listen to advice from party elders.

This could reduce his chances of getting the party’s national executive committee (NEC) to review his expulsion because he is relying on his allies to raise the matter in a meeting.

Meanwhile, the ANC intends to iron out tensions with the league.

In its policy discussion documents, to be released tomorrow, the ANC said it needed to examine its relationship with its youth league, “with murmurings in its ranks about the autonomy of the league, its relationship to the mother body and its role in mobilising young people”.

The party says the matter should be debated openly, “since the league is too important an organ to leave to chance”.

Malema was upbeat yesterday – his 31st birthday – while addressing the ANC Women’s League in his home town of Polokwane. He slammed the ANC for failing to condemn the violence outside his grandmother’s house in Seshego on Wednesday night.

Malema was expected to attend the ANC NEC political school in Pretoria yesterday, but he was absent.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula openly criticised Malema’s expulsion as a “political tragedy”.
