Youth disrupt pro-Zuma Mmabatho branch

Fisticuffs ensued when 13 young men claiming to be from the ANC Youth League disrupted proceedings at the Diphetogo branch in Mmabatho, North West.

The branch nominated President Jacob Zuma for a second term at its meeting last Sunday.

Residents from units 13 and 14 in the Mmabatho township and from the nearby rural villages Tontonyane and Motsoseng gathered, sitting on chairs set out in rows in the open space between the buildings of the Kebonang Secondary School.

The meeting was scheduled for 2pm but started three hours late after the self-identified league members tore the attendance register into pieces, apparently to stop the branch from nominating.

Branch members removed the young men using their fists, and order returned and a new attendance register was signed.

By 6pm, the meeting reached its quorum of 113 members.

Regional deployee Daddy Seboletswe talked about the ANC’s leadership document titled Through the Eye of the Needle.

After the secretary and treasurer gave their reports, a branch member at the meeting proposed that the names suggested by the branch leaders be nominated as the branch’s candidates.

These included Zuma for president, Cyril Ramaphosa as his deputy, Gwede Mantashe for secretary-general, Jessie Duarte as his deputy, Baleka Mbete for chairperson and Zweli Mkhize for treasurer-general.

Diphetogo branch selected its chairperson as its branch delegate to Mangaung.
