Youth league after Malema ‘like AWB with no ET’

2011-11-14 14:45

Without Julius Malema, the ANC Youth League is in trouble, says political analyst Zweli Mncube.

He said Malema had come to symbolise the party.

“It’s like when AWB leader Eugene Terre’Blanche died. It is hard to replace such leaders,” said Mncube.

The ANC in Mpumalanga has welcomed the youth leader’s suspension for bringing the party into disrepute and denies it was a political strategy ahead of the ANC’s elective conference next year.

ANC provincial secretary Paul Mbenyane said the disciplinary processes against Malema and his national executive aimed to maintain stability within the party.

“We dismiss the allegations that the disciplinary process and the outcome were influenced by politics surrounding the party’s conference that will be held next year in Mangaung,” said Mbenyane.

“We welcome, respect and support the outcome of the disciplinary process involving the national leadership of the league.”

Mbenyane said the ANC respected Malema’s intention to appeal his suspension.

“It is his constitutional right as it was explained by the national disciplinary committee during the announcement of the verdict,” he said.

A few hours after the ANC announced Malema’s suspension and that of youth league spokesperson Floyd Shivambu, Malema told reporters in Polokwane that he would appeal his suspension and meet his enemies at the party’s elective conference in Mangaung in the Free State next year. – African Eye
