Youth league supporters gather for march

2011-10-27 07:55

About 600 supporters have gathered at Beyers Naudé Square in Joburg for the ANC Youth League’s ‘economic freedom’ march due to take place today.

While there have been groups of people singing, most of them have been sitting and waiting for the march to start.

The march will proceed to Sandton, from where the marchers will be bused off to Pretoria for the night vigil.

The march has been without incident and there is a heavy police presence.

A youth league official asked the marchers to be well behaved and disciplined and warned the marchers about divisive influences among them.

“There are members of the National Intelligence Agency here who will try to make us fight amongst ourselves and make the police shoot us,’’ he said.

A marcher, Cecilia Manyaka (27), from Limpopo said the reason for her participation was because she couldn’t find a job.

“I have a computer literacy diploma yet I don’t have a job. I have been looking for a job since 2006,’’ she said.
