Zahara, AKA take the Metro gongs

2011-11-26 18:54

Last night’s girl of the moment, Zahara, went pound for pound with rap prince AKA at the 11th Metro FM music awards.

The two stars each walked away with three awards.

Zahara scooped the best female album, hit single of the year for Le Ngoma featuring DJ Sbu, and song of the year for Loliwe.

AKA was named best newcomer, best hip-hop album and best-produced album for Altar Ego. Durban kwaito boy band Big Nuz proved they are still a force to be reckoned with when they took home two gongs for best group album and best kwaito album for Pound for Pound.

The upset of the night was newcomer Madoda snatching the best African pop album award for Mzizi from established stars Theo Kgosinkwe and Ntando.

Copying Lady Gaga paid off for singer-choreographer Somizi Mhlongo.

He was named best-styled artist, beating favourites Kgosinkwe and Nkulee Dube.

The event, hosted by Metro FM disc jockey Tbo Touch and Selimathunzi presenter Zizo Beda, was held at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit and attended by an array of TV, radio, fashion and music industry stars.

But it was not just about music. Forget colour blocking – it’s so last season. Tangerine, teal and white?

Who wears them?

Word from the red carpet – which was actually black – is that anything goes. Women decided to chuck out style guides, glossy magazines and TV fashion shows that dictate what to wear when stepping out.

Individual style, a far cry from trend forecasts, triumphed as the stars arrived for what was billed as a star-studded ceremony.

Live presenter Minenhle Dlamini, 21, went for four outfits: three for the carpet and TV shoot, and one for the after-party.

“Minnie was offered dresses by eight different designers, which they (showcased) at Africa Fashion Week, and she was forced to choose one,” said Pumza Nohashe, the star’s publicist.

She was styled by Mpumi Ntintili-Sinxoto, wore Toy Girl shoes, with her bag and jewellery from her Legit clothing brand.

Style star and “it” girl Bonang Matheba opted for understated glam in a catsuit to end off a year in which she won the best-styled star accolade at the South African Style Awards.

Metro FM breakfast-show host Unathi Msengana and her newsreader pal Melanie Bala opted for safe black.
