2012-03-08 11:29

The official countdown to the biggest evening in the local music industry was kicked off this morning at the launch and nominee announcement of the South African Music Awards (Samas).

Now in its 18th year, the Samas have become the hottest ticket in the entertainment circles.

Leading the pack of nominees is the flavour of the moment, Zahara, with a whooping seven nods for her debut, Loliwe.

Among her seven nods, she is nominated in the Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.

Zahara is followed closely by the dance trio Mi Casa – for Mi Casa Music – and little-known Durban rapper Zakwe for his self-titled debut, with five respectively.

Also sitting pretty with multiple nominations is Afro-soul star Zonke Dikana who earned three for her album Ina Ethe, while Cape Town-based synth-pop band Goodluck also walked away with three for their self-titled album.

Record of the Year, which is voted by the public, includes These Streets by Mi Casa, Amapantsula Ajabulile by Kabelo Mabalane, Ex by Character, Facebook by DJ Cleo, Lengoma by DJ Sbu featuring Zahara, Loliwe by Zahara, Phakade by Lira and Taking It Easy by Goodluck.

The 29 categories were revealed this morning at the Turbine Hall in Newtown, Johannesburg.

The event was attended by industry heavyweights such as Mabalane, Loyiso Bala, HHP, Solly Mahlangu, Tshedi Mholo, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and Lira – they all presented different categories.
