Zambia favourites to win U-20 tourney

2011-12-10 07:52

Zambia Under-20 are the favourites to lift the Metropolitan Cosafa Under-20 Championship trophy today.

The junior Chipolopolo meet Angola in the final where Zambia could retain the trophy they have already won 11 times.

Zambia beat Botswana 2-0 in the semis while Angola turned a 2-0 half-time deficit into a 4-2 win over Malawi in the semifinals.

Cosafa president Suketu Patel said the championships had come from being a sideshow to a major tournament.

“Today the tournament is as good as any CAF competition and perhaps better in terms of organisation and publicity – we have nine matches broadcast live on television this year.

“We want to maintain this level of standards and we are now planning to do Under-17 Championships next year.”

Patel was re-elected Cosafa president today in a one-man race after South Africa’s Danny Jordaan withdrew during the elective conference in Gaborone.
