As early results started trickling in after voting in Zimbabwe yesterday, Zanu-PF supporters were already out celebrating.

But riot police and soldiers with guns were spotted on the streets of Harare should the mood turn ugly.

Some of the results for the National Assembly elections are coming in from constituencies, and three jubilant Zanu-PF officials were spotted in the hotel lobby of the Rainbow Towers Hotel, the temporary headquarters for the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Another group of Zanu-PF supporters in the Mbare township were in a celebratory mood this morning, kicking a ball and shouting that the party had scored a goal.

Despite claims of vote-rigging by the opposition, both the ZEC head Rita Makarau and the African Union observer mission head, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo provisionally declared yesterday’s polls free and fair.

There were no reports of serious violence. Although the polls closed at 7pm last night, voting continued by candlelight to accommodate those who were in the queue by that time.
