Zardari says Pakistan was not part of operation to kill Bin Laden

2011-05-03 14:31

Islamabad/Washington – Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari today indicated that his country had not played an active role in the operation in which Osama bin Laden was killed.

In an article published by the Washington Post, Zardari said the commando operation against the al-Qaeda leader in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad was “not a joint operation”.

Zardari, however, welcomed the outcome of the operation, saying “the source of the greatest evil of the new millennium has been silenced, and his victims given justice”.

Pakistan was satisfied “that our early assistance in identifying an al-Qaeda courier ultimately led to this day,” he added.

Bin Laden had been traced to a neighbourhood no one would have suspected – a compound some 50km north of the capital.

US special forces swooped in and killed Bin Laden at the compound early yesterday. Shortly afterwards, the head of Pakistan’s secret service ISI, Ahmed Shuja Pash, announced on television it had been a joint US-Pakistan operation.

Intelligence sources said Pakistani security forces had merely supported the operation.
