Zuma: Do more with less finances

2014-12-09 09:29

More needs to be done with less in order to balance the country’s finances, says President Jacob Zuma.

“We are fighting wasteful expenditure and corruption. We are also freezing budgets of non-essential goods and services, withdrawing funding for posts that have been vacant for some time, and reducing the rate of growth of transfers to public entities, particularly those with cash reserves,” said Zuma in written replies to Parliament yesterday.

Zuma was responding to a question by Congress of the People leader Mosiuoa Lekota, who wanted to know if Zuma would uphold “rigorous compliance” to the 2014 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) in order to reduce annual expenditure.

The MTBPS was delivered by Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene in Parliament on October 22.

Zuma said Cabinet and government supported the tough measures contained in the statement.

“These cost-containment measures are being implemented without compromising service delivery and our commitment to providing basic services to the poor,” he said.

The National Development Plan provided guidance when it came to “difficult choices” on how to use limited available resources.

The aim of the MTBPS was to restore balance to the nation’s finances, bolster investment and achieve better value for money in public expenditure.
