Former president Nelson Mandela’s condition has improved overnight, and he “remains critical but is now stable”, the presidency has said.

President Jacob Zuma issued a statement this afternoon, shortly after visiting Mandela in the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria, saying: “I cancelled my visit to Mozambique today so that I can see him and confer with the doctors. He is much better today than he was when I saw him last night.

The medical team continues to do a sterling job. We must pray for Tata’s health and wish him well. We must also continue with our work and daily activities while Madiba remains hospitalised.”

The presidency also said it is “disturbed by the rumours that are being spread about former president Mandela’s health. We appeal for respect for the privacy and dignity of the former president.”

Zuma decided to call off his trip to Mozambique, where he was due to attend a Southern African Development Community summit, after visiting Mandela in hospital late last night.

Mandela’s daughter, Makaziwe, this morning told SABC in an interview that her father didn’t look well, but was still responsive and they still had hope.
