President Jacob Zuma has defended his references to the Second Coming of Jesus when he speaks at rallies.

“I’m a Christian. I think all Christians every Sunday talk about Jesus; why is it not an issue? Not just every Sunday, every day as they pray. Why is it not an issue; why with me it is an issue? I’m a Christian. I talk about Jesus like all other Christians,” he told editors and journalists at a lunch hosted for them at the presidential guest house in Pretoria yesterday afternoon.

“It is not my imagination. It is said he will come to fetch us, and every Sunday even when people are being buried, they say that he will rise on the final day,” he said to laughter.

“Because everybody knows Jesus will come. Why should I be banned from talking about his life? I see no reason why I can’t talk about Jesus. Because I’m a Christian I believe in Jesus, he will come.

“Even in the past, sinners were too many when Jesus was sent down. There are even pastors who talk to God who say maybe he needs to come first ... you will leave a lot of us behind.”

Zuma has often been quoted as saying at rallies that the ANC would govern until Jesus comes. Recently, he has also been asking for Jesus to come soon because there were many sinners.
