Zuma appoints new SABC chair

2013-10-04 08:50

President Jacob Zuma appointed a new SABC chairwoman and a deputy, the presidency has said.

“President Jacob Zuma has in terms of section 13 (3) of the Broadcasting Act 1999... designated Ms Ellen Zandile Tshabalala as chairperson and Prof Mbulaheni Obert Maguvhe as deputy chairperson of the board of the SABC,” spokesman Mac Maharaj said yesterday in a statement.

Tshabalala served as chairwoman of the interim board. She holds a BComm degree, a postgraduate diploma in labour relations, and an International Bankers Licentiate diploma.

Maguvhe is an associate professor at the University of SA’s department of inclusive education. He holds a PhD and master’s degree in education studies for the visually impaired.

He is a co-founder of the SA National Association of the Blind and Partially-Sighted and has worked extensively at the SA National Council for the Blind.

Parliament dissolved the broadcaster’s board earlier this year after infighting prompted all but one member to resign.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe announced a new board on September 25.
