Zuma arrives in Russia

2010-08-05 07:57

President Jacob Zuma arrived in Russia today for an official visit, his office announced.

“The visit is the first by President Zuma to Russia following the state visit to South Africa in 2006 of former Russian Federation president Vladimir Putin,” the presidency said.

“The visit takes place within the context of strengthening North-South cooperation with the aim of consolidating, strengthening and enhancing political relations; economic and commercial relations; and co-operation and partnership on culture, education and skills development,” the presidency said.

Zuma was scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev to discuss, among other things, the setting up of a binational commission or an appropriate platform for regular presidential summit-level meetings.

Zuma was accompanied by 11 Cabinet ministers and a delegation of business people.

He was due back in South Africa on Saturday.
