Zuma attends ‘social cohesion’ summit

2012-07-04 07:01

President Jacob Zuma is expected to attend the national Social Cohesion summit in Soweto today.

The summit is being hosted by the department of arts and culture.

Last month, Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile said the summit would present people with an opportunity to talk to each other about their values, aspirations and vision of a united South Africa.

“We are confident that the summit will firmly place the promotion of social cohesion, nation-building, and national identity on the national agenda,” he said at the time.

“South Africans have proven themselves to be a nation that thrives and finds solutions to difficult problems through dialogue, discussion and reaching out to one another.”

Political parties, representatives of civil society, business leaders and government representatives had been invited to attend.
The summit will be held under the theme: “Creating a caring and proud society”.

The president announced the need for the social cohesion summit in May following the storm of controversy caused by Brett Murray’s painting “The Spear”, which depicted Zuma with his genitals exposed.
