President Jacob Zuma has congratulated newly elected president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, the international relations and cooperation department said.

“President Zuma extended his congratulations and best wishes to president elect Rouhani and the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and expressed the hope that relations between South Africa and Iran would be consolidated under his leadership,” the department said in a statement today.

Rouhani was elected as the new president on June 14 after he won more than 50% of the votes.

He would succeed current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in August 2013.

As far as Iran’s nuclear programme was concerned, Zuma requested Rouhani to give priority to resolving all outstanding issues with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“Doing so would not only allow Iran to reclaim its rightful place in the international community, but it would also result in the lifting of international sanctions, which has caused immense hardships to the Iranian people,” the department said.

The joint commission between South Africa and Iran is scheduled to take place in Pretoria on October 10 as a mechanism to consolidate relations, and exchange views on international and regional developments.
