Zuma endorses new judges

2010-10-20 14:14

President Jacob Zuma has endorsed the 17 people that the Judicial Service Commission recommended for appointment as judges.
The commission’s spokesperson Dumisa Ntsebeza said the new judges included Judge SA Majiet, Judge WL Seriti and Judge L Theron to the Supreme Court of Appeals.

Judge CN Patel for deputy judge president in KwaZulu-Natal; Ms N Radebe and advocate R Seegobin for the KwaZulu-Natal High Court; Judge NC Dambuza for the Competition Appeal Court; advocate B Hartle for the Eastern Cape High Court in Bhisho, Acting Judge NG Mjali for the Eastern Cape High Court in Mthatha.

For the north and south Gauteng high courts: advocate HJ de Vos, Mr HE Ismail, advocate F Kathree-Setiloane, Mr RE Monama, advocate SP Mothle, advocate WL Wepener.

For the North West High Court advocate N Gutta and for the Western Cape High Court, Dr MI Samela.

The two other positions in that court were not filled.

They also did not appoint anyone to the Labour Appeals Court due to deliberations over whether labour appeals would in future be heard in the Supreme Court of Appeal.

There was also no recommendation for Limpopo.

Ntsebeza chuckled when he explained that Thohoyandou advocate Maele Mushasha had applied, accompanied by a glowing recommendation from the International Association of Women Judges that “she is appropriately qualified”.

“He turned out to be very much male and not female,” he said.

Of the female applicants six of those recommended were black and one white.

Of the males, 10 were black and two were white.

The unfilled positions, apart from the Labour Appeals Court posts, will be readvertised.
