President Jacob Zuma celebrated his 73rd birthday today.

According to a statement by the presidency, Zuma’s children organised a private family gathering at John Dube House, the official presidential residence in Durban.

“I am grateful for the gift of life,” Zuma said.

“What makes me happy and contented, is to live in South Africa, a beautiful successful country with wonderful people, and which has a bright future.

“However, what keeps me awake at night is the amount of work we must still do to improve the lives of all, especially the poor, and the need for us all, government, communities and all sectors, to work faster each day towards a better life for all.”

Zuma said his birthday wish is “for all South Africans to live together in peace and harmony”.

“I would like to see an entrenchment of national unity and togetherness, where all citizens regard themselves as one another’s keepers, and where we come together to solve problems and build a united and prosperous South Africa together’’.

Zuma will travel to Cape Town “for ANC duties after the family luncheon”, the presidency said.

The presidency also wished Zuma a happy birthday.

Earlier this week, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was the first to congratulate Zuma on reaching the “milestone”.

The 91-year-old Mugabe, who was on his first state visit to South Africa in 21 years, said: “I want to congratulate you (Zuma), not only on reaching this milestone, but also for your commendable effort to catch up with me.”
