Zuma makes 12 advocates silks

2011-12-19 13:06

President Jacob Zuma has granted senior counsel status to twelve advocates, his office said.

They are advocates Thys Strydom, Michiel Daniel du Preez, Marc Leonard Haskins, Gerhardus Bartholomeus Botha, Michael Hendricks Mabena, Nicoline Janse Van Nieuwenhuizen, Soraya Khatija Hassim, Andrew Papi Laka, Lesego Matlhodi Montsho, Petrus Gerhardus Cilliers, Abram Thami Ncongwane and Moses Mphaga.

“The president congratulated them in their new status and wishes them well in their practices,” the presidency said in a statement.

It stressed that Zuma exercised his powers under section 84(2)(k) of the Constitution to confer the status of silk on the advocates.

The president’s prerogative to do so is being disputed in a case before the North Gauteng High Court brought by Advocate Roshnee Mansingh.

The court has heard argument that the status of senior counsel is not “an honour” in the same sense as, for example, national orders, and therefore it cannot be granted by the president in terms of the Constitution.
