2013-09-21 12:20

President Jacob Zuma sent his condolences to the government and people of Mexico after 101 people were reportedly killed in a tropical storm this week.

“We mourn with the government and the people of Mexico as they come to terms with the effects of the devastating storm, leaving behind a trail of destruction and death,” Zuma said today in a statement.

“The people of South Africa share the pain and loss of the loved ones, their homes and property and our thoughts and prayers go to the affected families.”

Agence France-Presse (AFP) earlier reported 101 people had died in landslides and flooding in Mexico over the past week.

Another 68 people were reported missing.

Clayson Monyela, spokesman for the department of international relations, said there had been no reports of South Africans stranded in Mexico.
