Zuma snubs France over Libya

2011-09-01 14:26

President Jacob Zuma has snubbed French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s invitation to Paris to discuss the future of Libya after the fall of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

Zuma’s declining of the invitation to Paris shows that tensions between North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the African Union over the invasion of Libya and the subsequent ousting of Gaddafi continue to linger.

The meeting, which starts in Paris today, will include members of the North African country’s national transitional council and representatives of some European governments.

Zuma said he believed that the process of Libya’s transition to democracy should not be taken away from the United Nations, whose Security Council declined a no-fly zone which eventually resulted in the collapse of Gaddafi’s regime.

Speaking in Oslo after meeting Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, Zuma said he believed that the Security Council resolution had been misinterpreted, leading to the sidelining of the African Union in the resolution of the Libyan crisis.

“Now that the National Transitional Council has taken over a larger part of Libya we need the UN to take initiative on how we move forward,” said Zuma, who ends his state visit to the Northern Western Europe country today.
