There needs to be unity within the tripartite alliance, President Jacob Zuma has said at a Workers Day rally in the Free State.
Addressing a modest crowd in the Botshabelo stadium, Zuma said the alliance needed unity within its individual partners which then needed to be transferred into the tripartite alliance.
Zuma said the alliance needed to lead South Africa.
“We have a huge task of the alliance. There are those against us working hard so that we do not achieve success.”
Zuma also urged the different leaders of the alliance to be clear on contentious issues so there were no uncertainty among their members.
He told the gathering that political rights and workers’ rights have always walked hand-in-hand in South Africa.
He said the country could not separate “May Day” celebrations from the African National Congress’ freedom celebrations.
Free State ANC chairperson Ace Magashule earlier introduced the president as one of the greatest leaders of South Africa.
Magashule said Zuma was not a leader created by the media, but was born out of the struggle.
“He will still be president tomorrow, not because of the media, but due to the people of South Africa and the branches of the ANC.”
