Zuma wishes Muslims well over fast

2012-07-21 08:25

President Jacob Zuma wished the nation’s Muslims well at the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

“[I] take this opportunity to wish all Muslims well over Ramadan and I am confident that the important lessons of this period will help South African Muslims in continuing their positive contribution to this beautiful country,” Zuma said in a statement yesterday.

Ramadan is a yearly observance set to the Islamic lunar calendar. It lasts a month and includes a fast of both food and drink from dawn until dusk.

“Fasting teaches patience and dedication. At the same time, it also enables one to feel and understand the plight of the poverty stricken,” Zuma said.

He said the holy month was an important observance for Muslims around the world.

“It is an important form of worship that increases within the individual, his or her bond with the Almighty, and also increases their consciousness of their duty towards worship,” Zuma said.
