eThekwini ANC murder plot case adjourned

2013-09-02 13:53

The trial of the man accused of orchestrating the murder of ANC eThekwini Regional Secretary S’bu Sibiya has been adjourned until September 26.

Xolani Magnificent Zulu (35), who allegedly paid hitman Zamani Sikhakhane to shoot Sibiya at his home in Inanda after an ANC meeting in July 2011, was not asked to plead.

Zulu, whom the State alleges conspired with “other persons’’ to kill Sibiya over eThekwini Municipality tenders which the ANC leader had questioned, will remain in custody.

The conspirators allegedly met at Zulu’s home in Yellowwood Park in south Durban to discuss the killing, which Zulu allegedly organised along with Sikhakhane.

Sikhakhane was killed in a subsequent shootout with members of the now disbanded Cato Manor Serious and Violent Crime Unit.

He allegedly shot dead Warrant Officer Rakesh Maharaj and wounded two other policemen in the gun battle during a pre-dawn raid on a house in Welbedacht, near Chatsworth, some four months after Sibiya’s murder.

According to the indictment, there were “tensions’’ between Sibiya and “certain members of the ANC’’ over lucrative city tenders allocated from 2009.

According to the indictment, Sikhakhane may have been accompanied by at least one other person when he pulled the trigger.

His mysterious alleged co-conspirators have not yet been identified.

There was a large crowd in attendance for the brief court session.
