KWAZULU-NATAL will benefit from at least 10 of the 18 Strategic Infrastructure Projects (Sips) to be developed by the government.

Projects to benefit KZN include:

• Improved rail access to Richards Bay from Mpumalanga;

• A new “dig-out” port in Durban;

• New logistics and transport infrastructure between Gauteng and Durban;

• Integration of Free State’s industrial strategy into the Gauteng-Durban route;

• Improved access to the Wild Coast along the N2;

• A national school-building programme;

• A national waste and sanitation infrastructure plan;

• Projects to boost regional African integration;

• Investment to better access to communication technology;

• Projects to boost higher education; and

• Implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme.

An Infrastructure Co-ordinating Committee (PICC) has been set up to co-ordinate the projects.

Last year the committee monitored the spending of R24 billion quarterly on the projects — they claim to have provided work for 145 000 people.
