103-year-old Cordwalles unveils building

2015-02-07 00:00

CORDWALLES Preparatory School for Boys in Pietermaritzburg marked its 103rd anniversary with a new multimillion-rand junior primary building yesterday.

The R7 million construction, which began in April last year and was completed in November, was officially opened yesterday by former teacher Pixie van Heerden.

The school was founded by Bishop Samuel Baines in 1912 and has been consistently applauded for being outstanding in academics and sports.

According to the school’s website, Cordwalles Preparatory School was founded “as a direct result of Michaelhouse moving from Pietermaritzburg and needing a preparatory school of its own to ensure its future enrolment”.

It was named after a preparatory school at Maidenhead on the Thames in England.

The new building maintains the architectural style and beauty of the red-brick campus in keeping with the original, existing buildings, the school said in a statement.

The custom-designed classrooms were done by architect Nick Grice and with extensive input from teachers and other stakeholders, while construction was done by Haines Construction.

“This is a realisation of our dream of ensuring that the boys are equipped with the best facilities and a good education environment,” said principal Simon Weaver, himself an Old Boy.

He said their master plan was to consistently increase classes. In 2009 they added four classrooms.

He said they have a goal to ensure they have an environment in which pupils can unlock their talents.

“It has been a great celebration and everyone is excited.”
