11 pupils injured after two taxis crash

2014-09-10 00:00

ELEVEN pupils were injured in a collision between two minibuses at Wartburg yesterday.

One of the minibuses was transporting pupils from Wartburg Kirchdorf and the Georgenau Combined School, while the other was not carrying passengers.

According to police, the vehicles were involved in a “partial head-on collision” as a result of which they overturned. They landed up in a nearby sugar cane plantation near the Bruyns Hill store.

When paramedics arrived two of the patients had already been privately taken to hospital.

The remaining nine were treated for both minor and serious injuries.

The road leading to Swayimane and Tongaat was closed to traffic until police cleared the scene.

Relatives of those involved in the accident were in tears and were concerned about the condition of the children.

A crowd of people gathered around the scene to find out had happened.

Some people blamed speeding as a result of the cause of the accident.

Both minibuses were wrecked.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said initial reports were that both vehicles were carrying pupils but when paramedics arrived on scene they discovered that just the one had been carrying passengers.

“The drivers had only minor injuries and decided not to be transported to hospital after being assessed by the paramedics,” he said.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of reckless and negligent driving was being investigated.
