12 years for cable thieves

THREE copper thieves have been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment each by the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court.

Xolani Brian Masimula (28), Sizwe Hlangu (32) and Mandla Shezi (29) were convicted of copper theft. They were nabbed in a vehicle with stolen cables valued at R98 000 on May 24 last year by the Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit. The cables belonged to Transnet and were stolen from Ashburton railway lines.

Magistrate Corrie Greyling said the state had proved the case against the three men beyond a reasonable doubt.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the Organised Crime Unit officers for arresting the men and for the investigation that led to the men’s conviction.

“This conviction sends out a strong message that cable theft is regarded as a serious offence as it puts the lives of others at risk. Those who have not been caught yet must know that we are working tirelessly to catch them and they will be dealt with in a similar manner,” she said. — WR.
