THIRTEEN people, including a seven-year-old child, were critically injured in two accidents just four hours apart in Brackenham, Richards Bay, yesterday.

At midday yesterday, a child was struck by a car on Via Davallia drive, sustaining a serious head injury and multiple fractures.

Netcare 911 paramedics found the child on the roadway in a critical condition.

Netcare coastal media liaison Chris Botha said the young boy was “stabilised and skilfully immobilised” on scene and transported to Ngwelezane Hospital.

Then during rush hour traffic, 12 people were injured in an six-vehicle pile-up at the intersection of Via Davallia, R619 and Heliumhoogte Road.

“Reports from the scene indicate that two trucks, three cars and a taxi collided at the intersection. Our paramedics found three cars trapped between the two trucks, their drivers miraculously escaping uninjured. A taxi collided into the back of one of the trucks, leaving five people seriously injured, and seven with minor injuries,” said Botha.

The injured were transported to various hospitals after being stabilised on scene.
