15 charged for vigilante murders

EIGHT women and seven men have been charged in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court with Monday’s vigilante murders of two men at Ezinketheni, near Copesville.

The court ordered that they be detained for seven days pending further police investigations.

Outside the court — where 14 of the accused appeared briefly in the afternoon — a huge crowd gathered from early yesterday morning, chanting, singing and protesting their arrests.

The fifteenth accused was said to be in hospital, but the nature of his illness is not known.

The accused appeared briefly in court in connection with the murders of Nathi Gwala and a man identified only as “Rasta” on October 6. The men were hauled out of their homes, beaten and set alight.

The accused are also charged with two counts of arson.

They were not asked to plead.

On hearing that the 14 were to be detained in prison for a week, gasps of dismay echoed around the packed courtroom, but the crowd was quickly hushed by police who lined the walls of the court to ensure that the proceedings went smoothly.
