15 yrs late: Claim to adjust wife’s pension

2013-06-10 00:00

A COURT bid by a man from Memel to get his wife’s pension adjusted, 15 years after an agreement was reached to compensate the many thousands of pensioned public servants who were discriminated against during the apartheid years, could affect thousands of people.

Two agreements, Resolution 7 of 1998 and Resolution 12 of 2002, were signed to adjust pensions of employees who had been discriminated against in terms of their race, sex, marital status, medical and disability status.

This includes women who had to resign because they became pregnant and who were then forced to join a temporary pension fund when they returned to work. It also includes people who were placed on the temporary fund because of medical or other reasons.

The closing date for applications has been postponed several times, and Thinus Lombaard from Memel in the Free State said the process was being prolonged ridiculously long. Some people who qualified for compensation had already died.
