2010 Comrades: Almost half the 20 000 available places taken already

2009-10-07 00:00

ORGANISERS of the 2010 Comrades Marathon have urged runners who wish to participate in next year’s event to register quickly as only 20 000 runners can participate and 9 000 people have already registered.

Craig Fry, media and communications manager, confirmed that there are only 11 000 places available.

He said the organisers will accept only 5 000 new runners and 15 000 returning runners.

Fry said that of the 9 000 places that have been taken, 231 were taken by international runners while 8 972 had been taken by runners from South Africa and Africa.

They exclude applications that were posted and have not yet reached the organisers.

He said spectators will get to see last year’s winners, including the winner of the men’s race, Stephen Muzhingi.

“Even the legendary Bruce Fordyce has registered and he will be running next year’s Comrades Marathon.”

Fry said, however, that he has not seen the registration details of the Russian Nurgalieva twins who have dominated the women’s race in the past few years.

“They run under the Mr Price banner so their registrations are probably still coming.”

Fry said returning runners will be able to register until October 31 and novice runners can register throughout November.

He encouraged people to register soon to avoid disappointment as the deadlines will not be extended.

Runners can register through the official website www.comrades.com or at Mr Price shops.
