25 children injured after taxi leaves road

2014-08-21 00:00

TWENTY-FIVE children were injured while on their way to school yesterday morning when the minibus transporting them crashed.

The accident happened at around 7 am near Estcourt High School.

Robert Mckenzie of the KZN EMS said the children, all under the age of 12, attend several schools in the area. The minibus apparently left the road on a bend and crashed into three trees and then into a house.

Estcourt News reported the home owner saying all she heard was a loud bang. On investigating, she discovered the smashed taxi.

Mckenzie said paramedics assessed and treated the children at the scene, which had drawn a large group of bystanders who wanted to help.

“The ambulances had to make several trips to Estcourt Hospital to transport all the patients,” he said.

Education Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said three children were still in hospital while the rest had suffered minor bruises and were released.
