25 years for killing girlfriend's 'interfering' mom

2008-11-10 00:00

A man admitted stabbing his girlfriend’s mother to death on September 29 because she “interfered” in their relationship and angered him by calling his mother a “witch”.

The man, Zazini Morris Masondo, was sentenced to 25 years’ jail by Pietermaritzburg High Court Acting Judge Nompumelelo Radebe yesterday.

The judge ordered that he must serve two-thirds of the term before he can be considered for parole.

Judge Radebe found there were mitigating features in the case that enabled her to depart from the minimum sentence of life imprisonment prescribed for premeditated murder.

These were that Masondo (27) of Osizeni, Newcastle, was provoked and that the relationship between Masondo, the victim, Norah Ndlovu (43), and her daughter, Joanna (20), was “turbulent”.

The judge said she disregarded the fact that Norah Ndlovu was five months pregnant when Masondo stabbed her, because there was no evidence that he knew this.

She said she took into account that there was “no elaborate planning” on Masondo’s part, although the murder was premeditated.

Radebe noted that despite Masondo’s previous convictions for assault and malicious injury to property (he broke a window at Ndlovu’s home during a violent episode before the murder), he is still young and could be reformed.

She also accepted that Masondo had shown remorse by pleading guilty six weeks after the incident happened.
