THREE different accidents claimed the lives of three people and injured nine over the weekend — eight of them from a collision near New Hanover on Saturday afternoon.

A car travelling along the N3 northbound near Hayfields Pick n Pay collided with the back of a truck parked on the side of the road on Saturday afternoon.

The driver of the car is believed to have died on impact and was the only occupant in the vehicle.

A police source who could not be named said search and rescue and Msunduzi fire department worked for a full hour with the jaws of life to recover the body from the wreckage.

In another incident on Saturday, one person died and another was seriously injured after a taxi overturned in Durban near Queen Nandi Drive.

Paramedics and the fire department arrived at the scene and found a person still trapped under the wreckage while another was found lying at the side of the road.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the jaws of life were used to free the woman but she died soon after she had been removed from the wreckage.

He said the cause of the accident was still being investigated by police.

The New Hanover crash caused the death of one person, injuring eight others.

Mac’s Towing manager Jason Naidoo said a report from one of his employees stated a car and a bakkie were involved in a head-on collision in New Hanover.

He said it was not clear what caused the accident.
