3?000 entrants for Witness Spar Ladies Race

2010-09-01 00:00

THE petite Poppy Mlambo will be back to defend her title at Sunday’s Weekend Witness Spar Ladies race at Alexandra Park.

Mlambo’s mission to run both the Pretoria and Durban Grand Prix events this past weekend was dashed as she was involved in a vehicle accident on the way to the Pretoria race.

She, however, managed an impressive bronze medal in Durban and will now be pacing herself as she sets her eyes on the handsome prize money of R5 000 for first place in Pietermaritzburg.

This will be her second weekend where she tackles a sea-level course.

The race is renowned for its challenging hills and relaxed atmosphere, and this year attracted some 3 000 entries from ladies of all ages who will run the scenic route around Alexandra Park. Most ladies will run for fun although the first places stand to win R13 950 in total prize money.

Funds from the race will be contributed to the non-profit and public benefit organisation RedCap Foundation. The foundation strives to make a difference to children in various communities in SA by promoting physical education as an important part of a child’s development and health living.

Registration for the race will be at The Oval, Alexandra Park and opens on Saturday September 4 from 12pm to 5pm and before the race on Sunday from 6am to 7.30pm. Runners will start the 10km Weekend Witness Spar Ladies race at 8am, followed by the start of the five km race.

No entries will be taken on race day.
