‘40 bullet tale’ may be just for publicity

A KZN-born maskandi singer’s claim that he escaped unharmed when a group of men sprayed his car with AK47 bullets might be just a publicity stunt to promote his latest album.

Police have refuted the shooting claim, saying no such incident has been reported.

Jabulani Nene, lead singer of Izingqwele, claimed that he reported the matter to the Colenso police on October 11.

Nene, whose story appeared in the front page of a national daily newspaper yesterday, alleged that the attempt on his life had something to do with his music career.

He said a group of men armed with AK47s sprayed bullets at his Toyota Corolla as he was driving to Johannesburg after promoting his latest album in kwaMaphumulo, near Stanger.

The alleged shooting incident is said to have taken place on the R74 between Greytown and Muden on the night of October 10.

He said he was travelling with a friend, who was also unharmed. He said bullets damaged the left, front and rear parts of the vehicle.

“Police said more than 40 AK 47 bullets penetrated my vehicle,” said Nene.

Despite his claim that he reported the attack in Colenso, police spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said no such case was reported at that station.

Nene said he is sure he was the target of the gunmen since they only shot at his side.

“When the shooting started, I was driving at about 70 km/h on a bend. As they shot two tyres, the car slowed down, which is when I heard one of the attackers shouting ‘We got him, he won’t proceed’ as I had my window slightly opened.

“But I continued to drive and stopped a few kilometres away. After changing the front tyre, I continued driving with one flat tyre all the way to Colenso where I reported the matter,” said Nene, who was born in Bergville.

Nene said he suspects the shooting had to do with his refusal to sign a recording deal with a Johannesburg company.

“After releasing my second album, Ubeth’uzongidlisa, in May this year, I received a call from a stranger threatening my life, as I did not record it with his company,” said Nene.
