A Dr Seuss classic

2008-03-28 00:00

ONLY one new film comes to the city this weekend, at all three complexes — Dr Seuss’s Horton Hears a Who. Other changes see Love in the Time of Cholera and Jumper joining the Nu Metro line-up, and Black and White going to CineCentre.

Horton Hears a Who is a CG-animated film from Fox Animation, who were also responsible for the Ice Age films. This one is based on Dr Seuss’s classic story and directed by Steve Martino and Jimmy Hayword, with the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell. Horton is an elephant, a sensitive soul who finds an endangered, microscopic world, inhabited by Whos, almost literally under his feet. And so, despite derision, he sets out to save it.

It’s a lovely story, and reviews suggest that, unlike other films based on Dr Seuss, the look and mood are faithful to the original. The only problem seems to be that the film extends the story beyond what it can really sustain. Still, that probably won’t worry the young target market.
