A bitter-sweet hockey season for unbeaten GHS

IT has been a bitter-sweet Parklane Superspar A-League season for the Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS) first hockey team.

Despite being the only team to end the season unbeaten, GHS were shaded in the title race by winners The Wykeham Collegiate (TWC).

A single log point separated winners TWC from runners-up GHS and it boiled down to TWC winning five matches, drawing one match and losing one match for 16 log points, while GHS won four matches and drew three, with no defeats, for 15 log points.

GHS scored 25 goals with five against for a positive goal difference of 20, while TWC scored 14 goals with six against for a GD of eight, but it was that precious extra win that made all the difference for TWC.

The GHS season ended on a high note with a well-worked 3-1 win over St John’s.

“We ended the 2013 season unbeaten in the local league, as well as in the pre-season tournaments,” said GHS coach Taryn de Winnaar.

“At this stage of the season, we have played 31 games, won 19, drawn six and lost six. What is most pleasing to note is that we have scored 77 goals and conceded only 15. Due to our success earlier this year at the Spar Pre-Season Tournament, we will be participating in the Spar Finals in Kloof on July 20 and July 21.”

FINAL A-LEAGUE POSITIONS: 1 TWC; 2 GHS; 3 St Anne’s; 4 Epworth; 5 St John’s; 6 Treverton; 7 Voortrekker; 8 Howick.
