A busy month for Macs

2008-02-05 00:00

DURING February at Macs, the exhibition of Wearable Art by Sue Akerman, Annette McMaster, Jutta Faulds and Clare Smith in the Café and 3D galleries will continue. There are also angels, mosaics, papier-mâché pieces and jewellery by Macs members, and wire birds by Wesley Flanagan on show.

A special event this month will be the launch of the Macs brand of postcards tomorrow at 5.30 pm for 6 pm at Macs House. All are welcome to attend.

Many of the artworks that have been used for the postcards have been part of exhibitions over the last few years, but some are new and have been made available to Macs as a fundraiser. Participating artists include Jutta Faulds, Kerala Landon, Jinny Heath, Gill Gerhardt, Sue Akerman, Annette McMaster, Hermine Spies, Helga Beaumont, Moray Comrie and Rose van Staden.

Activities at Macs continue as usual: on Mondays, Penny Forder runs workshops on drawing. On February 11, the subject is beginners’ drawing, using the right side of the brain, and on February 18 and 25, she will follow this with life drawing with a model. Tuesday is painting day with Jinny Heath. The class will undertake specific technical and formal problems in one-day exercises. New students should have some art background. On Wednesdays, the Wednesday Art Group continues to meet and work in the medium and at the level of the participants’ choice.

The theme for Creative Thursdays during 2008 is Changing Your Habits and the Wearable Art exhibition is designed to encourage people to attend workshops. In February, there will be drawing of life-size, self-portrait mural panels inside the prefab walls at Macs and drafting of basic (ethnic, non-structured) patterns.

On February 16, Wild Knitting continues. It is a good way to de-stress, have a few laughs and do something useful at the same time. For more information about booking and the cost of the various courses, phone 033 386 6500 (mornings).

Macs Coffee Shop is now open from Monday to Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm, on Friday from 8 am to 8 pm, Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm and Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm. Phone 033 346 0690 to book your table.
