A busy week for hockey lovers

2012-07-09 00:00

FOR hockey lovers, the Boy’s U16 IPT begins today with the A section on the Papes Astro surface at Maritzburg College and the B section on the AB Jackson Greenfields turf just up the road. At the same time, the Boy’s U14 Southern region tournament begins on the Mason Astro at Kearsney.

The U16 Inland team will be hoping to do as well as Inland did last year and improve on the 2012 Inland’s showing at the U18 IPT which ended on Saturday. The latter had to play Eastern Province for position seven or eight at the tournament after losses to Amathole (Border) by one goal and a thumping by Southern Gauteng, where they lost 0-5.

A draw with Boland did not help their cause and then they drew with Northern Gauteng in the first play off for three or four, but lost in the penalty shoot out.

Two years ago, the U16 IPT was won by KZN Inland, but they could not put it together this year. Perhaps they went in with this in the back of their minds and did not expect to be under the sword, as happened this year.

The Coastals side who were in the top five at U16 level did better than Inland this year, with three wins and two draws, but then lost to Southern Gauteng in the first playoff.

The SA Schools A side was announced at the end of the tournament and it included three Inland and one Coastal player.
