A day at the races: Weekend Witness charity challenge race day

2009-12-07 00:00

THOUSANDS of people from across Pietermaritzburg and Durban, colourfully clad in their summer wear on a perfect Sunday afternoon, attended the Gold Circle Weekend Witness Charity Challenge Race Day at the Scottsville Racecourse yesterday.

The event, which is in its sixth year, served as a platform for a host of charity organisations from in and around Pietermaritzburg to market themselves and raise funds for their organisations.

The nine-race programme featured the three finals of the Gold Circle Weekend Witness Chapter Challenge Series (KZN Chapter).

Seven charities benefited from the event, namely Lions Club of PMB, KZN Blind & Deaf Society, Pietermaritzburg & District Community Chest, Rotary Club of PMB Azalea, Natal Children’s Home, Reach Out With Love Foundation, and Camperdown Peace, Maritzburg County & Dromedaris Masonic Lodges.

In total, they received R10  000 in the “Dig for Gold Draw”.

In addition, each charity was given marquees as well as tables and chairs in order to host guests.

They used the allocation as a platform to sell tickets and raise funds through their endeavours, including catering.

Hundreds of families were entertained during the event, which focused completely on raising funds and awareness in order to support the less fortunate members of society.

These visitors also supported the various charities as guests of the fundraising functions held in each marquee.
