A dream debut

CAPE TOWN — Dane Piedt will have to wait patiently for the next opportunity to establish himself in the Proteas cricket team.

The 24-year old Cape Town off-break bowler made a dream debut against Zimbabwe in Harare during the past week when he took numerous wickets, establishing a new South African record with his spin bowling.

He became the first Proteas bowler in 109 years to take a wicket with his first ball. His figures of 8/152 were also the best ever by a South African spin bowler on debut.

But he will now have to wait until December when the West Indians tour South Africa to repeat his performance.

Despite his achievements during the Test against Zimbabwe, his greatest moment was when he received his Test cap from South African fast bowler legend Shaun Pollock.

According to Piedt the continuous support he received from his team-mates on and off the field had been incredible. “I have received a lot of advice, not only from Hashim (Amla), but also from AB (de Villiers) in the slips and Quinton de Kock behind the wickets,” he said.

“They reminded me not to be over-eager. There was one stage during the Test when I wanted to take a wicket with every ball and they reminded me to follow the processes.”

Piedt, who toured Sari Lanka with the Proteas – although he did not play – said that experience had been immeasurable.

After his success in the Test against Zimbabwe, he eyes a place in the Proteas’ One-Day International team and dreams of playing in the World Cup Tournament.

But for now his focus is on the Cape Cobras and their campaign during next month’s T20 Champions League in India.
