A family's sacrifice

• Feroze Abbas Khan has directed Gandhi My Father, the film based on his play, Mahatma vs Gandhi. The film delves into facets of Gandhi's life that are not usually in the spotlight as it explores the price his family paid for a nation's freedom. Gandhi transformed the soul of a nation, but it seems he could not save the soul of his troubled eldest son, Harilal. The film had its world premiere at Nu Metro Montecasino last Sunday and opens for general release today. The film stars Akshaye Khanna, Bhoomika Chawla, Shefali Shetty and Vinay Jain.

• The Return is directed by Asif Kapadia and is a ghost story/thriller starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Sam Shepard. Joanna Mills (Gellar), a travelling businesswoman, begins having nightmares of a murder that occurred 15 years ago. Soon she is drawn to an old farmhouse, where the murder took place. Reviews suggest the chills aren't all that chilling.

• More horror with Vacancy, directed by Nimrod Antal and starring Kate Beckinsale, Luke Wilson and Frank Whaley in the tale of a young married couple who become stranded at an isolated motel and find hidden video cameras in their room - and a video nasty on the television, obviously shot in the same place. They realise that unless they escape, they'll be the next victims of a snuff film.

• Bruce A. Evans directs Kevin Costner, Dane Cook, Demi Moore and William Hurt in Mr Brooks. Earl Brooks (Costner) has it all: a loving wife and daughter, community standing and his own thriving business. But, what no one knows is that Mr Brooks is also the notorious serial murderer, The Thumbprint Killer.

• Licence to Wed is a romantic comedy directed by Ken Kwapis and starring Mandy Moore, John Krasinski and Robin Williams. Newly engaged, Ben Murphy and Sadie Jones can't wait to start their life together. The problem is that Sadie's family church, St Augustine's, is run by Reverend Frank (Williams), who won't bless Ben and Sadie's union until they pass his patented, “foolproof” marriage prep course. Reviews suggest this one falls flat. - Arts Editor.
