A guide to managing metering

2012-02-28 00:00

A LACK of proper water meter management has motivated the Water Research Commission (WRC) to publish a reference guide for municipalities.

The commission says the divided responsibility between billing and meter management can often result in poor billing, incorrect data capture and poor maintenance.

The WRC report, Introduction to Integrated Water Meter Management, covers all aspects of water meters and water metering in municipalities.

Professor Fred van Zyl of the University of Cape Town, who supervised the project, said water metering was particularly important for municipalities since it formed the basis for much of their income through the sale of water to their consumers.

“In South Africa, like in many other countries, there is a legal imperative on municipalities to meter consumers and manage water losses in compliance with legislation and standards,” he said.

The publication, WRC Report Number: TT 490/11, can be obtained from the WRC in Pretoria. — WR.
