A hilarious quick read

2011-09-14 00:00

HANDSOME doctor Jeremiah Koekkentapp has the Jewish women in the medical practice he works at all astir with his good looks, promising prospects and sympathetic ear. The colourful drama-queen Mrs Levy however, hopes that it will be up to her daughter Sylvia to discover his bedside manner, as she plots to find a good Jewish husband for her daughter.

When Koekentapp sees the beautiful Sylvia, he soon falls in love with her, but there is a big, big problem. Koekentapp is no Jew, and is less welcome than a pig in a synagogue in the Levy household, unless he can make a plan fast.

He cleverly bluffs his way through a Hebrew prayer at his first meal at the Levys but surprisingly in the midst of the deceit, a profound spiritual awakening occurs. The prayer invoked a certain something, an ancient calling which Koekentapp cannot deny. He decides to convert to Judaism to win Sylvia’s heart, then realises with horror that he must now bid farewell to a small but significant piece of his anatomy to seal the deal. It’s circumcision time, and off to theatre he goes.

With bags of fun, a poke or two at both majority and minority groups, A Match for Doctor Koekentapp is a frothy, quick read, which will certainly bring a smile and a chuckle. A good first novel from Allan Kayle, himself a medical doctor.
